Photoshop Xtreme Text Effect

5 comments Links to this post

In this tutorial you will learn how to create the text effect shown in the picture above. This tutorial is extremely easy, only 3 layers are used (including the background layer) . Fast and easy steps, nice and smooth outcome, that’s the way I like it!

We will walk through 2 simple steps.

1) Making the text layer;
2) Making the reflection layer ;

Lets get started!

WidgetBucks - Trend Watch - WidgetBucks.com

Step 1.

Create a new Photoshop document of 400x400 pixels. Fill the background in black by pressing Command/Ctrl+I while the background layer is selected. Grab the text tool, set the size of the font to 100pt (going to the toolbar just below the application menu) and write a word like “Xtreme” using “#60bf06” or another color similar to this one.
Now let’s add the following effects ( Layer>Layer Style and: )

My outcome so far is this:

Step 2.

Duplicate the text layer (Layer>Duplicate). Create a new layer on top of this duplicate. Select the two layers (the new blank layer and the duplicate layer) and merge them.

Flip the resulting layer vertically and move it (using the Move Tool) down.

Now the image should be like this:

The only thing that remains now is to mask the top layer and fill the mask with the black and white gradient.

Now wasn’t that fast?! For more fast and easy tutorials, please support my blog by subscribing and digging the articles you like. Thank you.
Enjoy!

Xtreme Checkbox in 5 minutes

0 comments Links to this post

In this tutorial we are going to create a checkbox. We are going to follow the next 5 steps.
1) Create the document;
2) Create the “box” layer;
3) Create the “checked” layer;
4) Merge and resize the outcome;
5) Compare the outcome;
Let’s get started!
Step 1.
Start Photoshop .Got to File>New. Create a 400x400 new document.
Step 2.
Grab the rectangular marquee tool and make a square (holding shift while drawing the selection).My selection is around 200x200 pixels. Try to crate one similar to mine by watching the info pallet while drawing the selection. With the selection active, create a new layer (Layer>New Layer) and name it box.

With the box layer selected, fill the selection with white (Edit>Fill). Now it’s time to add the following layer styles:

My outcome is this:

The box is almost ready. Let’s add a glassy effect by command/ctrl clicking the box layer icon from the layer pallet, and using the Elliptical Marquee Tool draw over the bottom of the box holding alt pressed to subtract from selection.

With the selection active, create a new layer on top of the box and name it glass. Fill it with white (Edit>Fill) and set the layers opacity to 30%.

Step 3.
Create a new layer on top of all the others and name it “Check”. Draw a check mark using the Custom Shape Tool.

Take the Pen Tool and right click on the path. Select fill, and use white. Then apply the following styles:

The result:

Step 4.
Select the box layer, the glass layer and the check layer using shift and merge them (command/ctrl+e) then resize the resulting layer and save the file as a JPG/PNG/GIF or whatever you want.

Step 5.
Second try of doing this, whit a bigger size box:

Photoshop Online Free Training Sources

0 comments Links to this post

Photoshop is the best photo editing tool on the planet at the moment. Therefore it is a natural thing to find tons of websites a blogs about its usage. From the many types of approaches that can be found on the net, when it comes to learning Photoshop, I discovered some that were easy and expensive, other hard and free. The free and easy ones are harder to find, some say. That might be true, but only if you don’t like using the supercomputer that you have, it’s called your brain.

Bellow I will talk about the free training sources and how to use them at their maxim potential – or how I used to use them at their maximum -.

The Step-by-Step Tutorials

Trying to learn Photoshop these days is a hard thing to do. Why? Because there are to many sites this days that post the daily step-by-step tutorials that don’t teach you what exactly to do but just show you the outcome and let you follow the steps to the end. After that, you might want to bookmark them, leave a comment on the so-called website and came back next week and read another step by step “trick” that will give you a precise outcome.

The problem is that Photoshop is all about creativity. It’s part of the Creative Suite right? These step-by-step tutorials give you almost nothing that could make you creative… However they might be useful for you in a way you never thought possible.

I was reading 10, maybe 12 tutorials/day at the beginning, and almost all the time I tried to find out how did the author get to that steps. How did this author do it? Well that’s the question you should ask your self while reading or doing the steps on your computer. Each tutorial can teach you a rule. Let’s take for example a button tutorial. Have you noticed that almost all those buttons have a smooth effect or a glass effect? Reading 5 or 10 tutorials about this might make you discover that there are 5 ways of smoothing and 4 ways of adding the glass effect. I just hope this will clarify what I’m trying to say here.

You will need to read a lot of tutorials like this if you want to improve. They are the worst – in my opinion – and sometimes hard to understand because they have missing steps or sometimes they don’t get exactly the result needed but they are needed!

Even thought they are most of the time boring, they train you for the real thing. Don’t go on a tutorial indexing page and read all the tutorials one by one or pick up random ones. This approach doses not work well at all. Try to pick up a target. Let’s take for example “learning to make buttons”. Search for thing like “button”, “web button”, “glassy effect”, “smooth button”, “web 2 buttons” and read about 10 of them. Try to put some of them into action and see if you agree with me. See if you can find the “common” land in all of them.

Some of the coolest websites out there – again in my opinion- are:

“Good Tutorials”

The place where you can find new ones every hour or so. One of my favorite Photoshop Training Free Source. It’s not only about Photoshop, but it’s grate. Try it! For a beginner, it’s a grate place to be because there are many easy to follow tutorials, and the staff selects the submission quite well.

“Tutorialized”

Huge is the word for this site. 7740 Photoshop tutorials at this time. Has a lot of flash ones too, but the tutorials quality is a bit lower and many times I found tutorials with missed steps. It’s a good practice pace for medium level or higher level photoshopers.

The sites has it’s good part to, it has tons of tutorials, so who know what jewels you might find there. More links can found in the “links” section of the blog so fell free to try a few of them.

Something similar to the plain-text step-by-step tutorial is the step-by-step video tutorial. Those ones are a bit better because they are proven to work tricks, and usually the author talks about what he dose and why. Exactly the things you need to listen. Pay close attention the what the author says, try to remember keywords like “and now let’s add a effect using ”.

"Photoshop Tutorials Blog"

This one has some video tutorials that I like. Even now, when I have 3 years and a half of photoshoping history, I find out new things from the video tutorials. This blog is lovely, so go take a look! :D

"Video-Tutes"

Even though those videos don’t have sounds, they are really grate for the beginning. Truly a well done work for the “Basics” category. I will defiantly link to them in the future, when I will write about the basics about Photoshop on my blog here.

The huge step-by-step Tutorials

Why am I talking about huge step-by-step tutorials in a different way? Well… Those ones are almost the “thing” when photoshoping. Huge step-by-step tutorials like full web design tutorials and complete photo manipulation are something grate to try , but they require a medium level of knowledge and a lot of free time. Don’t expect to learn everything you need from one tutorial like this. They have a lot of missing steps and they almost defiantly don’t comment on the decisions that they make when, for example, they add the logo of the site on the right side, and the menu under the title bar, using a soft gradient etc.

This learning approach is not for newbie ones. It requires experience, and it will not give results if you don’t find the key elements and remember them. It’s also true that practice make it best, but you risk ending up losing time and gaining nothing.

Unfortunately, my knowledge about photo manipulation is limited; I am not a real artist so I didn’t train a lot on the retouch techniques. However, for the web design part I have another interesting suggestion.

Web design tutorials

My bet is that if you are want to be a better web designer you are already prepared to learn a bit of code and get the basics of color themes handled.

Knowing which colors go well with which colors and how to make web elements stand out is the next step after learning the basics of Photoshop. I made a big mistake taking the advanced training tutorials before learning the color rules. There are many html/css related tutorials that talk about this matter. Keep in mind that there is no use to learn more about photoshoping than the basics if you don’t know how to crate a simple CSS styled site.

Free material about this matter is grate, but it will take some time to acquire the “eye” to see the way colors go and the way elements should be placed in a unique and user-friendly way.

Good-luck with your learning! :D

Xtreme Notice [1]

0 comments Links to this post

I want to create a "photoshop basics" category of posts, where I talk about all the things that are considered the minimal skills needed to photoshop. Starting from the "technical" stuff:

  • Links
  • Extra Tools
  • Photoshop Free-addons
And then going into each section of using photoshop:
  • Tools
  • Pallets
  • Layers
  • Color Correction
  • Filters
  • and so on...
I've already talk about this matters at school. I've teached some of my classmates and I think that it shouldn't be so hard to translate my scheme into English and post it on this blog.

I want to know if you guys want me to do this or not. It would be much easier for me to post a lot of links to where you can find the basics tutorials, in fact I'll do that anyway, in my future "lessons". I consider this will help you understand the advanced skills easier because everything starts from here, from the basics.

One funny way of photoshopping

Today I found a nice site, with a decent style and fast-loading.. Lets face it, time is important for all of us, so what I want to show you now is a funny "Photoshop Phriday". It takes 5 Minutes to see some funny images and find out some of the small things that photoshop can do for you - just in case you are a beginner-.

I like the Dungeons & Dragons Monsters gallery. I used to do stuff like that when I started to play with photoshop, the only difference was that I used my classmates as test subjects!

I am telling you about this because I think it's a good way to get into the mood, you know! Make thing start for you, and begin reading something about photoshoping - I suppose that you DO want to learn the photoshoping skills since you're reading this right? -.

Let me know what you like from this site because I want to know what should my priorities be when I'll start posting some tutorials. Do you like funny stuff? Why?Why not?. I am interested in the opinions of my readers, so don't be shy ;). Help me blog efficiently!

Some improvement tricks

1 comments Links to this post

It's a rainy day in my town today. A perfect time to meditate, talk via messenger and post on blogs. Since my OS crashed a few days ago and right now I am reinstalling my Creative Suite I'm not going to write a tutorial or anything like that. Today its all about the person who learns photoshop, not what it learns.

What exactly do you want to learn? How will you do it? Have you ever thought about it? Is it web design? Is it photo editing?Is it both? You should have the answer to this! If you don't...then I'm sorry for you :). Just joking! What I'm trying to say here is that you need a learning plan, and I'd be glad to show you mine.

My plan was simple. I wanted to learn photoshop because I liked to make buttons and interfaces for different things like small web pages etc. I thought that I needed a teacher. I couldn't get one! So...I improvised and got a nice learning system. Here's what I've done:

  • Decided I have to learn on my own.
  • Used Google and forums to get a huge list of photoshop tutorials sites.
  • Surfed the internet, bookmarked all the sites that had a cool design.
  • Started to learn the basics on my own, playing and making a lot of mistakes.
  • Learned to study first, then apply. Thats when I started reading tutorials.
  • Started to waste time on step by step tutorials that didn't explained much of the things that were done and why was exactly that procedure needed.
  • Observed that I can pick a task and then try to find the way to do it. This helped me a lot! Knowing where you want to go is a grate deal!
  • Ended up doing some stuff instinctively ( that means being creative in my opinion ).
  • Started to blog about what I've learned.
I hope that you got the basic idea from what I've written here. Make a plan, and not just keep it,do it!

Next time I'll start writing about the basics of Photoshop CS3. I will try an original approach, and I hope you guys will love it :D
